Chapter 27
CYRUS
Cyrus slept for what felt like days, waking only to devour the meals that were routinely brought to him by the Duchy Guard. Spending so much time cooped up in his room would normally have driven him insane with boredom, but after all the terrible events of the last month, he was happy to just have a few days of quiet recuperation in a comfortable bed. His sense of urgency had been somewhat diminished by the devastating news of Camilleâs death; there was nothing to rush for anymore.
For the first few days he had been racked by guilt. All that he had promised her â safety, freedom, a new life â he had been unable to deliver on any of it. If only she had given him more time.
He felt foolish, for even though he had only known her for a few days, he had started to develop deep feelings for her. She was enchantingly beautiful, of that there was no denying, but there was more to her than just looks. She had a charisma that left him spellbound, and a resilience unlike anything he had ever encountered before to have endured all that suffering and misery inflicted on her. Cyrus had contemplated suicide many times before, yet until recently his life had been one of privilege and indulgence. Camille, on the other hand, had been beset on all sides by tyranny since childhood, experiencing horrors that Cyrusâ mind could scarcely begin to comprehend. How could he dare wallow in his own self-pity whilst knowing what Camille had been through? She had been strong, with an intrinsic toughness that contrasted her delicate, pretty appearance. It was for this reason that Cyrus could not believe that she had finally given up and taken her own life. Something more sinister must have happened when Isabelle and Captain Neal visited her, he was sure of it.
It saddened him greatly to think how different her life could have been. What she had to offer the world would never be realised, mostly thanks to an abusive father and a corrupted, fat pervert that had crushed her spirit with his sinful lust. It stirred in Cyrus a familiar anger, and he vowed to continue fighting the despicable tyrants of the world until his last breath. If holding those to account and preventing such vile injustices from happening again were to cost him his life, then so be it. As he had told himself before, it was not a world he wanted any part of anyway.
In the rare times where he did not think about Camille, he thought about his trial before the council. It would be like entering a pit of vipers â as Willard had alluded to, he had few friends remaining, and even fewer in positions of power. Rijkard, Willard and Isabelle would of course all be there, but as for the others, he was unsure. He began to wish he had paid more attention when tutored on the intricacies of the High Council, but he had found these lessons on political matters tedious.
